A victory to Western Symbol put the icing on the cake for one of champion trainer Gai Waterhouse’s greatest days at the track on Saturday.
Waterhouse had already won the $3.5 million Golden Slipper with Pierro and $400,000 Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes with More Joyous before Western Symbol ended the day with victory in the Group Three Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m).
“You thought I might get sick of being in this position but I can assure I never do,” Waterhouse said.
“It has been one of the stable’s great days.”
Western Symbol is another stayer found in New Zealand by Waterhouse’s husband Rob and the trainer likened him the gelding to another successful stayer in her stable.
“This horse is so similar to Tullamore who won the Brisbane Cup last year and ran third in the Caulfield Cup,” Waterhouse said.
“I can’t tell you how similar they are.”
Western Symbol settled just behind the lead on the fence and worked his way to the front in the straight before fighting off Southern Skye to win by a long neck.
Snow Alert finished another half-length away in third.
